10 easy summer hairstyles for 2024: stay stylish and cool in the heat
Part of choosing the best multi-styler for your hair type is making sure it comes with the right hair care tools for the styles you want to create. So it’s important to look for a hair styler that allows you to customise it to suit your hair’s needs. The Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler, which offers a choice of 15 specialist attachments, lets you do just this.
1. Beachy waves
Occasion: Holiday mode
Ideal hair length: Medium and long hair
Nothing says summer like effortless beachy waves. This timeless hairstyle is perfect for any occasion, whether you're soaking up the sun or on a night out. You can achieve soft waves and curls using hair straighteners, a curling tool like the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler and dryer, a round volumising brush, or a hair dryer diffuser. For a complete guide, read our article Four ways to get perfect beach waves.
2. Volume ponytail
Occasion: The school run
Ideal hair length: Medium-long hair
A ponytail is a classic summer hairstyle for longer hair. This sleek and stylish look is great for keeping your hair off your neck and out of your face on hot days. To achieve the perfect bouncy, volumised ponytail, brush your hair upwards and secure it with a hair band or claw clip at the crown of your head. For added flair, wrap a small section of hair around the base of the ponytail to conceal the hair band.
3. Low bun
Occasion: A day at work
Ideal hair length: Medium and long hair
The bun is a go-to hairstyle for those lazy summer days when you want to look effortlessly chic. To create the low bun style, gather your hair into a low ponytail and secure with a hair band at the nape. Twist the ponytail loosely before wrapping it around the base to form a bun. Secure with hair grips and pull out a few strands to frame your face for a relaxed, undone look.
The loose strands left out of the bun can be curled or straightened with the Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener or Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler and dryer.
4. Braided headband
Occasion: A music festival
Ideal hair length: Short, medium, and long hair
Add a touch of bohemian flair to your summer look with a braided headband. This versatile hairstyle is perfect for keeping your hair off your face while adding a stylish accent to your outfit. Simply braid a small section of hair on either side of your head and secure both braids at the back with hair grips or bands. For a more polished look, curl the rest of your hair or leave it straight and sleek.
5. Half-up messy top knot
Occasion: When you’re running late
Ideal hair length: Short, medium, and long hair
The half-up messy top knot is a trendy and practical hairstyle that's perfect for summer. To achieve this playful look, gather the top section of your hair and secure it into a high ponytail. Then, twist the ponytail into a bun and secure it with grips. Leave the rest of your hair down or style it into loose waves for a relaxed vibe.
6. Fishtail braid
Occasion: On the beach
Ideal hair length: Medium-long hair
The fishtail braid is a timeless summer hairstyle that adds a touch of elegance to any look. This intricate braid may look complicated, but it's actually quite simple to achieve. Divide your hair into two sections and take a small strand of hair from the outer edge of one section. Cross it over to the opposite section, then repeat on the other side. Continue braiding all the way down and secure with a hair band. For a more relaxed look, gently tug on the braid to loosen it.
7. Smooth & sleek
Occasion: Date night
Ideal hair length: Short, medium, and long hair
Classic and sophisticated, this hairstyle is perfect for a put together evening look. You can achieve the style using a combination of the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer and Dyson Corrale™ hair straightener, or through wet to dry straightening with the Dyson Airstrait™ straightener.
To create a smooth and sleek style with the Dyson Corrale™, start with freshly washed hair, before blow-drying with the Dyson Supersonic™. When dry, brush your hair through and section it.
Position the Dyson Corrale™ close to the roots at an angle and place each section in the centre of the flexing copper plates so they can shape to gather hair. Glide the straightener through your hair with slow, even passes, experimenting with section size as you go.
To style with the Dyson Airstrait™, start with freshly washed, wet hair and rough dry slightly. Then set the machine to Wet mode, selecting maximum airflow and 140oC.
Pre-dry the roots with the machine arms closed and if you want more volume, pull your hair upwards and dry your roots from underneath.
Section your hair with the Dyson hair clips and straighten the bottom sections first by gliding the machine through your hair until dry. Once the underneath is styled, repeat the process on the top sections, including your fringe. Switch to Cool mode and run the machine through your hair to set the style with cool air.
8. Twisted ponytail
Occasion: Brunch
Ideal length hair: Short, medium and long hair
Put a modern twist on the classic ponytail with a twisted ponytail. This stylish hairstyle is perfect for adding a touch of glamour to your summer look. First, gather a small triangle section of hair on one side of your head and divide it into two. Twist the bottom section over the top and place both pieces of hair in the hand that’s closet to your face.
You’re then going to start adding hair to each section. Add a new piece of hair to the top section, transfer to your top hand, and then with your other hand add more hair to the bottom section and twist over.
Continue this process until you reach the back of your head. Secure the twisted braid with a Dyson hair clip and then repeat the whole thing on the other side. When the two twists are an inch or two from meeting, gather all the hair and tie into a ponytail.
9. Braided bun
Occasion: A summer wedding
Ideal hair length: Medium and long hair
Elevate your summer hairstyle with a braided bun. This sophisticated look is perfect for special occasions or a day at the office. To create a braided bun, start by curling your hair with the Dyson Airwrap™ multi-styler and dryer. This will add extra life to your finished look.
Next, braid a section of hair (using your braid of choice) on either side of your head. Then, gather all your hair into a low ponytail and twist it into a bun. Wrap the braids around the base of the bun and secure with hair grips. Finish with a spritz of hairspray to keep your style in place all day long.
10. Bubble braids
Occasion: Shopping trip
Ideal hair length: Medium-long hair
Creating bubble braids is playful but low maintenance way to elevate your look. They work for most hair types and can be styled in different ways. To achieve a glam bubble braid ponytail, start by brushing your hair thoroughly with the Dyson wide tooth comb to remove any knots or tangles and then tie your hair into a ponytail using a clear hair band. Pull out any baby hairs or your fringe for a more relaxed look or keep these sections in if you’d prefer a sleek style.
Next, take another clear hair band and tie it a couple of inches below the top of your ponytail. Using your fingers, tease the hair between the first hair band and the second to loosen it into a bubble shape. Repeat this step every couple of inches down the length of your ponytail until you get near the bottom. Leave a loose section at the end of the braid. Finally, tease each bubble again to make sure you’re happy with the shape.
For added flair, you can accessorise with hairpins or ribbons. Finish by spritzing with hairspray to set the style in place.
This summer, beat the heat with these easy and trending hairstyles. Whether you prefer tousled waves, sleek updos, or playful braids, there's a hairstyle for every occasion. Experiment with different looks to find the perfect style that suits your personality and keeps you feeling cool and confident all summer long.
