Debunking common hard floor cleaning myths
Do you really know how to clean your hard floor?
We take a look at common floorcare myths to see if they actually hold up.
Read on to learn the difference between hard floor cleaning fact and fiction.
Does a mop really clean hard floors?
While mopping hard floors may appear effective, a mop can actually spread dirt – pushing it around rather than picking it up. As well as this, the traditional mop and bucket method relies on using contaminated water. Every time you put the mop back into the bucket to rehydrate, the water gets dirtier and dirtier.
You can constantly swap out the water, but this wastes water, effort, and time.
The Dyson V15s Detect Submarine™ features two separate water tanks for contaminated and uncontaminated water. This separation means you can use your wet cleaner without worry of reapplying dirty water.
Do steam cleaners really work?
Steam cleaners are often sold as effective floor cleaners and eradicators of bacteria.
But steam cleaners may not reach high enough temperatures to actively remove bacteria within their average exposure time.¹ Steam cleaners are capable of reaching temperatures needed to kill bacteria, but the machine needs to be pressed onto the surface in one place for a few minutes for the bacteria killing to take place.¹
In fact, our tests showed that steam cleaners spread bacteria due to their design, as they don’t remove bacteria but move it instead.¹
Does cleaning solution work?
You may have bought a cleaning solution for general surfaces or floors specifically under the impression that it will kill germs and bacteria.
But some cleaning solutions aren’t anti-bacterial, meaning they don’t actively kill bacteria.¹
Instead, applying one of these solutions to your floor could spread the bacteria around, increasing the likelihood it becomes an issue.¹
Only anti-bacterial solution actually removes bacteria from your floor. So look out for this when you’re shopping.
Does electrolysed water work?
Electrolysed water isn’t effective enough to perform day-to-day cleaning.¹
Our internal research found that electrolysed water didn’t have the cleaning capacity to remove bacteria from your floor when a quenching agent representing a small amount of dirt that you could find in the environment was present.¹
As well as this, our tests found that electrolysed water may leave a salty residue on the floor¹, contaminating it further and leaving your floor looking even less clean.
Should you only clean your hard floor when dirt is visible?
Some believe that you should only clean your hard floor when it’s visibly dirty.
This isn’t true.
The high-performance green LED light on our Fluffy Optic™ cleaner head proves this by highlighting otherwise invisible dust and dirt – demonstrating how dirty your home can be without you even realising it.
Once you also consider the presence of potential allergens within this fine dust as a factor, it becomes apparent how important a regular and consistent cleaning regime truly is
